Jess Klein is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Originally from Rochester, New York, she learned to play acoustic guitar and began writing songs as a college student in Kingston, Jamaica, while studying the country's musical landscape. Upon returning to the United States, Klein moved to Boston and started performing her music locally. Her early career includes independently releasing two albums, winning the Telluride Troubadour Songwriting Contest, and receiving several Boston Music Award nominations, which eventually led to her signing with the Rykodisc record label in 2000.
