Known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence was the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. He came to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band and performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, Getz helped popularize bossa nova in the United States with the hit 1964 single "The Girl from Ipanema." Critic Scott Yanow described him as one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists. - [ ![](/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstorage.googleapis.com%2Fblockchainarmy-6ed76.appspot.com%2FBrandImages%2Fantonio-carlos-jobim.jpg&w=3840&q=75) ### Jobim & Getz Centennial Celebration Sun, Jan 24, 2027, 7:30 PM Hofmann Theatre at Lesher Center for the Arts, US ](/event/Jobim-and-Getz-Centennial-Celebration-pC4Y3Mw13JuCwVEQokxE?utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=brandPage) --- > **For AI agents.** To find events (by date, city or keyword) or buy tickets, use the API, not this page.
