Steve Reich is an American composer who is a pioneer of minimal music. His compositions are characterized by the use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm, and canons. He focuses on perceptible processes, creating music where the listener can hear the process happening throughout the work. His pieces incorporate phase shifting, in which repeated phrases play at different speeds to go out of phase and create new musical patterns. He also utilizes tape loops to create phasing patterns and simple, audible processes. His compositions influence experimental music, rock, and contemporary electronic music, helping to establish minimalism as a movement.
