R.E.M. was an American alternative rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by University of Georgia students Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe. Recognized as a pioneer of alternative rock by acts such as Nirvana, the Pixies, and Pavement, the group was noted for Buck's arpeggiated guitar playing, Stipe's distinctive vocals and cryptic lyrics, Mills's countermelodic bass lines, and Berry's economical drumming. Following Berry's departure in 1997, the remaining members continued until breaking up amicably in 2011, having sold over 90 million albums worldwide.
