Nel 1981 un gruppo di designer decide che gli oggetti possono essere colorati, ironici e fuori scala. Nasce Memphis, e il design contemporaneo cambia linguaggio. Aldo Cibic era tra i fondatori, e noi abbiamo l'onore di averlo in campus.

Designer e architetto, partner di Sottsass Associati, in oltre 40 anni ha spostato il proprio lavoro dal design all'architettura fino allo studio dei luoghi e delle comunità, in Italia e all'estero. I suoi progetti sono passati più volte dalla Biennale di Architettura di Venezia e le sue opere si trovano nelle collezioni permanenti dei più grandi musei internazionali.

La sua presenza apre la presentazione del nuovo Dipartimento di Creativity, Arts & Design di H-FARM College e una riflessione sul ruolo dell'immaginazione in un momento in cui tecnologia e intelligenza artificiale stanno cambiando il modo in cui progettiamo, creiamo e immaginiamo il futuro.

Da Memphis a Venezia, passando per la Cina: l'immaginazione come strumento per ridisegnare il futuro

Un racconto che attraversa 40 anni di design, architettura e ricerca. Dagli anni con Ettore Sottsass e dalla nascita di Memphis alla ricerca sui luoghi e sulle comunità, fino alla Cina e al rapporto con Shanghai, dove Cibic è Honorary Professor alla Tongji University: un terreno di sperimentazione su come cambiano le città, le comunità e i modi di abitare.

Poi lo sguardo torna a Venezia con Venice Forever, il progetto presentato nel 2025 alla Biennale di Architettura. Una città fragile e straordinaria che diventa un laboratorio su nuovi modi di vivere, abitare e costruire comunità, e sul rapporto tra persone, ambiente e tecnologia.

Al centro resta l'immaginazione come strumento di progetto: prima di costruire qualcosa di nuovo, bisogna essere capaci di immaginarlo.

In 1981, a group of designers decided objects could be colorful, ironic, and out of scale. Memphis was born, and contemporary design changed its language. Aldo Cibic was one of the founders, and we're honored to have him on campus.

A designer and architect, a partner at Sottsass Associati, over more than 40 years he has moved his work from design to architecture and on to the study of places and communities, in Italy and abroad. His projects have been shown several times at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and his work is held in the permanent collections of the world's leading museums.

His visit opens the presentation of H-FARM College's new Creativity, Arts & Design Department, along with a wider conversation about the role of imagination at a time when technology and artificial intelligence are changing how we design, create, and imagine the future.

A story spanning 40 years of design, architecture, and research. From the years with Ettore Sottsass and the birth of Memphis to the research on places and communities, through to China and the relationship with Shanghai, where Cibic is Honorary Professor at Tongji University: a testing ground for how cities, communities, and ways of living are changing.

Then the view returns to Venice with Venice Forever, the project presented in 2025 at the Architecture Biennale. A fragile, extraordinary city that becomes a laboratory for new ways of living, dwelling, and building community, and for the relationship between people, environment, and technology.

At the center is imagination as a design tool: before we can build something new, we have to be able to imagine it.
