Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction silent film directed by Fritz Lang. Written by Thea von Harbou alongside Lang, the production is based on von Harbou's 1925 novel of the same title. Produced by Erich Pommer at Babelsberg Studio for Universum Film A.G., it stars Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, and Brigitte Helm. Regarded as a pioneering work, it was among the first feature-length science-fiction films. Filming occurred over 17 months in 1925 and 1926 at a cost exceeding five million Reichsmarks.
