Sergei Rachmaninoff

Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor who is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day. As a composer, he was one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. Initially influenced by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers, Rachmaninoff developed a personal idiom marked by song-like melodicism, expressiveness, dense contrapuntal textures, and rich orchestral colours. The piano features prominently in his compositional output, using his performance skills to explore its technical and expressive possibilities.
