St. John Passion
The St. John Passion, also known as Passio secundum Joannem or Johannes-Passion, is a sacred oratorio and the earliest of the surviving Passions from its composer's tenure as director of church music in Leipzig. The structure of this musical production falls into two halves. Its anonymous libretto compiles recitatives and choruses that narrate the Passion story from the Gospel of John, alongside reflective ariosos, arias, and chorales utilizing familiar hymn tunes. Characterized by an expressive immediacy, this work is described as an extravagant, unbridled, and less finished alternative to the St. Matthew Passion.
