Joseph Hall was an English and British bishop, satirist, moralist, and writer who lived from 1574 to 1656. His contemporaries knew him as a devotional writer, as well as a high-profile controversialist of the early 1640s. In church politics, he tended in fact to a middle way, serving as a bishop and author.
