Les Miserables

Les Misrables, colloquially known as Les Mis or Les Miz, is a sung-through stage musical based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. Composed by Claude-Michel Schnberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil, the production is set in early 19th-century France. It follows Jean Valjean, a French convict seeking redemption after serving 19 years in prison. Valjean breaks parole to start anew, but is pursued over decades by police inspector Javert. Their journeys lead to Paris, where characters are swept up in a revolutionary attempt by young idealists to overthrow the government from a street barricade.
