At the Gates is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, formed in 1990. Recognized as a progenitor of the mid-1990s Gothenburg Sound alongside Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, the group released four albums prior to disbanding in 1996. Their 1995 release, Slaughter of the Soul, is considered a landmark in the Swedish death metal scene. Following a 2007 reunion and a 2008 tour, the band resumed performing and released four additional studio albums: At War with Reality, To Drink from the Night Itself, The Nightmare of Being, and The Ghost of a Future Dead.
