The Philharmonia Orchestra is a British symphony orchestra based in London. Founded in 1945 by EMI classical music record producer Walter Legge, the orchestra worked with prominent conductors in its early years, including Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, and Arturo Toscanini. Herbert von Karajan was also closely associated with the orchestra during the late 1940s and early 1950s, playing a key role in its development despite never holding the title of chief conductor. During its first two decades, the Philharmonia became widely regarded as the finest of London's five symphony orchestras.
