The Cult
The Cult are an English rock band formed in Bradford in 1983. Before adopting their current name in January 1984, they performed as Death Cult, an evolution of lead vocalist Ian Astbury's previous band, Southern Death Cult. The group gained a dedicated United Kingdom following in the mid-1980s as a post-punk and gothic rock act with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary." They later broke into the United States mainstream as a hard rock band behind singles like "Love Removal Machine." Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy are the group's main songwriters and longest-serving members.
