Die Frau ohne Schatten
Die Frau ohne Schatten, Op. 65, is a three-act opera composed by Richard Strauss with a libretto by poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, his long-time collaborator. Written between 1914 and 1917, the production premiered at the Vienna State Opera on 10 October 1919. Early critics and audiences were initially unenthusiastic, often pointing to difficulties with Hofmannsthal's complicated and heavily symbolic libretto. Despite its challenging reception at launch, the work has overcome its early criticism to become a standard part of the operatic repertoire today.
