Black Nativity

Black Nativity is a production adapting the Nativity story, written by Langston Hughes. Performed by an entirely Black cast, the show features a book by Hughes with lyrics and music derived from traditional Christmas carols sung in a gospel style, alongside a few songs created specifically for the show. First performed Off-Broadway on December 11, 1961, this production was one of the first plays written by an African American to be staged there.
