Maria Stuarda is a tragic opera in two acts. This production is one of several operas focusing on the Tudor period in English history. The story is loosely based on the lives of the Queen of Scots and her cousin, the Queen of England, featuring an invented confrontation between the two monarchs. The libretto is based on a translation of a theatrical play. The lead female characters of this opera and two other related historical works are frequently called the three queens.
