John Cowan is an American vocalist and bass guitar player recognized for his work in progressive bluegrass. He joined the band New Grass Revival as their bassist in 1972, following the departure of original bassist Ebo Walker, and served as their lead vocalist. Notably, he was the only member of the group who did not come from a bluegrass background. In 2020, Cowan was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame as a member of New Grass Revival. He is also known for his longtime association with The Doobie Brothers.
