Robert Spano

Róbert Ragnar Spanó is an Icelandic-Italian jurist, judge, and former president of the European Court of Human Rights. He began his service on the court on 1 November 2013 and served as president from 18 May 2020, succeeding Judge Sicilianos from Greece, until 31 October 2022, when he was succeeded by Judge Siofra O'Leary. Before his service on the court, he served provisionally as parliamentary ombudsman of Iceland and dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Iceland. Following his tenure, he became a partner at the multinational law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.
