Lila Downs is a Mexican-American singer-songwriter, actress, and anthropologist who performs her own compositions and the works of others across multiple genres. Her music taps into Mexican traditional and popular styles, incorporating indigenous Mexican influences. She has recorded songs in various indigenous languages, including Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl, and Purépecha. Originally from Oaxaca, she studied at the Institute of Arts by Oaxaca and the University of Minnesota before starting her performances in the traditional music scene of Oaxaca City.
