Giles Corey
Giles Corey was an English-born farmer who was accused of witchcraft alongside his wife, Martha Corey, during the Salem witch trials in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Following his arrest, Corey refused to enter a guilty or not guilty plea. Consequently, he was subjected to the torture of peine forte et dure, dying after three days of being crushed. Because he refused to enter a plea, his estate passed to his sons rather than being seized by the Massachusetts colonial government.
