Sophie B. Hawkins
American singer-songwriter Sophie Ballantine Hawkins was born in New York City and studied percussion at the Manhattan School of Music before departing to pursue her musical career. She achieved critical and commercial success in the 1990s with her first two albums, generating hit singles such as "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover", "Right Beside You", and "As I Lay Me Down". Following a dispute with Sony Music regarding her third album, Timbre, Hawkins established her own independent label, Trumpet Swan Productions, through which she has published her subsequent recordings.
