Gwar, often stylized as GWAR, is an American heavy metal band from Richmond, Virginia. The band is identified by distinctively grotesque costumes, with a core thematic and visual concept revolving around an elaborate science fiction-themed mythology. This narrative portrays the band as barbaric medieval Nordic, mythological, biblical, or interplanetary warriors. Their stage shows incorporate social and political satire alongside over-the-top violent, sexual, and scatological humor. These performances notoriously showcase enactments of graphic violence that result in the audience being sprayed with fake blood, urine, and semen, leading the media to label them a shock rock band.
