The Drifters

The Drifters are an American pop and R&B/soul vocal group. Originally formed in 1953 as a backing group for Clyde McPhatter, the act underwent significant changes over the decades. A second iteration of the group, led by Ben E. King and originally known as the Five Crowns, was formed in 1959. Following 1965, members transitioned between these groups, with many establishing additional lineups under the same name. Today, several different bands performing as the Drifters trace their roots back to these original lineups, though they feature few, if any, of the original members.
