Rigoletto

Rigoletto is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi, featuring an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Based on the play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo, the production is widely considered the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi's middle-to-late career. The tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's daughter Gilda. Originally titled La maledizione, the plot details a curse that comes to fruition when Gilda sacrifices her life to save the Duke from an assassin hired by her father.
