Pagliacci

Pagliacci, which translates literally as 'Clowns', is an Italian opera in a prologue and two acts. The production features a libretto and music, telling the dramatic tale of an actor and leader of a commedia dell'arte theatrical company who murders his wife and her lover on stage during a performance. Within the story, the leader portrays a clown character on stage, while his wife portrays his unfaithful lover. This production remains a staple of the opera repertoire and is often staged alongside Cavalleria rusticana in a double bill colloquially known as 'Cav/Pag'.
