Parsifal is a music drama in three acts, described by its composer not as an opera, but as a sacred festival stage play. This work is the composer's last composition. The libretto is freely based on chivalric romances, recounting the story of an Arthurian knight and his spiritual quest for the Holy Grail. A tradition has arisen that audiences do not applaud at the end of the first act.
